Boston heads to Toyota Center tonight with momentum and a spread that gives them real breathing room. Tip is 8:00 p.m. ET. The Celtics enter 32-18 overall (16-10 on the road) and have won three straight, while Houston is 31-17 with an imposing 17-4 home mark and a three-game win streak of its own. The Rockets also own the first head-to-head, a 128-101 win in Boston, which sets up a “make the adjustment” rematch for Joe Mazzulla’s group. 

The case for Celtics +5.5 starts with the likely game script. ESPN’s odds board (via DraftKings) lists Boston +5.5 with a 216.5 total—more “half-court” than track meet. In lower-total games, points carry extra weight, and Boston has the defensive baseline to make that matter: the Celtics allow 108.9 points per game, compared to 110.0 for Houston, while both teams score right around 116 per night. If Boston can limit live-ball turnovers and force Houston to execute late in the clock, that +5.5 cushion becomes valuable in the final six minutes. 

Houston’s ceiling is obvious, but it’s also tied to availability. Kevin Durant is listed as a game-time decision (ankle) and leads the Rockets at 26.2 points per game; Alperen Sengun powers the inside with team highs in rebounds (9.4) and assists (6.3). Boston’s injury report still lists Jayson Tatum out (Achilles), plus Nikola Vucevic (not injury related) and Chris Boucher (personal), but the Celtics still bring a high-end scorer in Jaylen Brown (29.4 points per game) and enough perimeter creation to generate quality looks late. 

Covering +5.5 doesn’t require Boston to be perfect—just connected. Their recent results show a defense that travels: a 110-100 road win at Dallas and a 107-79 win over Milwaukee are in their last five. Houston has been excellent lately too (including a 118-114 road win at Indiana), so the margin is thin. The Rockets own a rebounding edge (49.4 to Boston’s 45.0), but if the Celtics finish possessions and stay within striking distance, this is a strong spot to take the points.
