Our Pick: Pistons -3.5

Boston heads to Little Caesars Arena for a potential East playoff preview, and Detroit is laying -3.5 at home. 

On paper, these teams are close—Boston is 26–15 (14–8 away) and Detroit is 30–10 (16–4 home)—but the context of who’s available and how the game is likely to be played leans Pistons.  Detroit also holds a 2–1 edge in the season series, so this isn’t an unfamiliar matchup for either side. 

The biggest swing factor is Boston’s injury situation. The NBA’s official injury report lists Jayson Tatum (out, Achilles) and Josh Minott (out, ankle), with Chris Boucher (questionable, low back spasms)—and Boston’s guard depth is also being monitored.  When your primary shot-creator and late-clock bailout option is unavailable, every half-court possession gets harder—especially on the road.

Detroit’s profile fits a spread favorite at home: efficient scoring (117.7 PPG) paired with an elite points-allowed mark (110.3), and they bring more creation volume (26.8 assists per game) than Boston (23.9).  The advanced numbers reinforce it: Detroit’s +7.4 net rating (116.6 ORtg / 109.2 DRtg) is right there with Boston’s +7.2, but the Pistons do it at a faster 100.40 pace—a tempo advantage that can stress a shorthanded rotation. 

This also sets up well for Detroit’s star engine. Cade Cunningham (25.9 PPG, 9.6 APG) drives the matchup, while Jalen Duren (10.8 RPG) gives Detroit extra possessions and rim pressure—two areas that travel well and translate to covering modest numbers.
