Mavericks vs. Jazz – Preview

Our Pick: Mavericks -4.5

Tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET in Salt Lake City, the Dallas Mavericks visit the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center.  Dallas enters at 14-23, while Utah sits at 12-24. 

Utah is in a brutal scheduling spot: the Jazz went to overtime Wednesday in Oklahoma City and lost 129-125, extending their skid to five straight losses.  Legs matter in the NBA, and tired legs tend to show up most on the defensive end—exactly where Utah has been weakest.

From a numbers standpoint, the matchup tilts strongly toward Dallas. The Mavericks own a 113.4 defensive rating (8th) and are allowing 116.95 opponent points per game.  Utah ranks 30th in defensive rating (122.7) and is surrendering 127.08 opponent points per game—the worst mark in the league.  Even if Dallas’ offense has been uneven—109.7 offensive rating and 33.4% from three (30th)—this is the type of opponent that can still generate higher-quality looks through paint touches, extra possessions, and free throws. 

The injury report is a factor, but it’s also baked into the number. Dallas will be without Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II, with P.J. Washington listed doubtful.  Still, Dallas’ path to covering -4.5 is straightforward: defend without fouling, rebound to finish possessions, and force Utah into half-court shots. Anthony Davis has been Dallas’ leading scorer (20.3 PPG) and top rebounder (11.1 RPG), giving the Mavs a reliable interior anchor in a game where Utah’s defense is already stretched. 

Utah can score (115.6 offensive rating, 15th) and is led by Lauri Markkanen (27.8 PPG), but their overall profile (-7.1 net rating) makes it difficult to trust them to hang around for 48 minutes—especially on tired legs.  Dallas’ net rating (-3.7) is meaningfully better, and that gap often shows up late when execution tightens. 

One more angle: some books were dealing Dallas closer to -6.5 earlier today, so -4.5 offers valuable cushion.
