Golden State Warriors at Portland Trail Blazers — Sunday, Dec. 14 (9:00 p.m. ET) at the Moda Center 

Tonight’s matchup in Portland sets up well for Golden State to handle business and cover the -4.5 number. The Warriors enter at 13–13 (8th in the West), while the Trail Blazers sit at 9–16 (12th).  Golden State is also coming off a tight 127–120 loss to Minnesota, a game in which Stephen Curry erupted for 39 points in his first game back from a quad injury.  Portland, meanwhile, finished its road trip with a 143–120 loss at New Orleans. 

The clearest edge is on the defensive end. The Warriors are allowing 112.3 points per game (5th in the NBA), while Portland is giving up 121.5 (25th).  When the gap is that wide, you don’t need a perfect offensive night to separate — you just need to consistently get “good” possessions and keep the opponent from living at the rim.

Golden State’s style helps create those quality looks. The Warriors average 27.4 assists per game (8th), and Portland ranks 27th at 24.7.  That matters even more with the Blazers’ ball-handlers banged up: Scoot Henderson, Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Matisse Thybulle, and Blake Wesley are all listed out on the NBA’s 2:30 p.m. ET injury report.  Portland bigs Donovan Clingan, Robert Williams III, and Hansen Yang are also questionable, which creates real uncertainty around their interior defense and rotation. 

On the Warriors’ side, Al Horford is listed out, but Golden State is expected to get Draymond Green back after he missed Friday — a return that typically stabilizes their switching, communication, and late-clock coverage. 

Portland can keep it interesting on the glass (45.6 rebounds per game, 6th), but if their frontcourt is limited and their backcourt is short-handed, the path is narrow.  With Curry back in rhythm and Golden State’s defense traveling, the Warriors are in the better position to win by multiple possessions and cover. If they play to their identity — move the ball, defend without fouling, and force Portland into tough half-court shots — this number is very manageable.
