Heat vs. Mavericks – Preview

The Miami Heat roll into Dallas tonight at 14–7 while the Mavericks limp in at 7–15, with Miami laying around 4.5–5 points and the total sitting near 240.5 at most books. 

Miami’s biggest edge is its explosive, balanced offense. The Heat are averaging 124.3 points per game (2nd in the NBA) on 48.3% shooting from the field, while Dallas scores just 111.1 per night, 28th in the league. Miami also out-rebounds Dallas 46.2 to 44.7 on average and moves the ball better with 30.3 assists per game versus the Mavs’ 24.5.  That combination of firepower, efficiency, and extra possessions is tailor-made to build and protect a margin in the mid-single digits.

Trends also favor the Heat. Miami is 13-7-1 against the spread on the season and 4-3 ATS when favored by at least five points, while going 7-3 straight up over its last 10 games.  In that span, Heat games have averaged 240.3 total points, essentially in line with tonight’s lofty number, suggesting their pace and scoring output have been consistently high. Dallas, on the other hand, is just 4-6 straight up in its last 10, with only 10 covers in 22 tries this season. 

Injuries further tilt things toward Miami. The Mavericks are without Kyrie Irving, Dereck Lively II and Dante Exum, with Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington listed as day-to-day—key hits to their shot creation and interior defense.  Miami’s injury report is lighter, with only depth pieces tagged as day-to-day. Even though the Mavs covered in the first meeting this season (a 106–102 Heat win as 7.5-point favorites), that was with a healthier Dallas roster and a much larger spread. 

With Miami’s elite scoring, superior recent form, and Dallas’ depleted rotation, the Heat look well positioned to win by multiple possessions, making a -4.5 number a reasonable ask for them to cover.
