Our Pick: Timberwolves +8.5
Timberwolves Look to Rebound in Game 2 & Cover the +8.5 Spread
After a disappointing 114–88 loss in Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Western Conference Finals, the Minnesota Timberwolves enter tonight’s Game 2 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder determined to adjust and remain competitive. Despite the lopsided opening result, several factors point towards Minnesota’s strong potential to cover the +8.5 spread.
Anthony Edwards is pivotal to the Timberwolves’ success. Limited to just 13 shot attempts in Game 1, he still managed 20 points, underscoring his scoring efficiency and capability. Throughout the postseason, Minnesota thrives when Edwards takes on a more aggressive offensive role; games where he attempts over 20 shots have yielded an impressive average of nearly 35 points per outing. Increased usage for Edwards will be critical tonight.
Meanwhile, Julius Randle proved effective offensively in Game 1 with 28 points on a highly efficient 9-for-13 shooting performance. However, turnovers continue to plague Randle, as he committed five in the series opener. Protecting the ball and maximizing Randle’s scoring efficiency through strategic isolation plays and pick-and-roll situations will be crucial for Minnesota to stay within reach.
Defensively, the Timberwolves have significant potential for improvement. Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels provide a solid defensive foundation capable of disrupting Oklahoma City’s dynamic offense led by MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. In Game 1, Gilgeous-Alexander dominated with 31 points, leveraging free throws and efficient mid-range shooting. Minnesota’s defensive adjustments, particularly in limiting fouls and better-contesting mid-range attempts, could significantly alter the Thunder’s offensive comfort.
Historically, the Timberwolves have demonstrated resilience, bouncing back effectively after losses in these playoffs. Their coaching staff has successfully implemented adjustments between games, evident throughout previous series. Expect Minnesota to increase defensive intensity, improve shot selection, and reduce costly turnovers to keep Game 2 close.
Although the Thunder remain formidable opponents, boasting defensive stalwarts like Alex Caruso and Chet Holmgren, the Timberwolves’ capacity for adjustments, offensive firepower, and defensive recalibrations positions them well to cover the +8.5 spread and possibly even the series.
